About Bumilangit Cinematic Universe

Screenplay Bumilangit officially announced the launch of Bumilangit Cinematic Universe Volume 1 (18/08/2019). In the next few years, seven films with interconnected stories will be prepared. Bumilangit Cinematic Universe opens with the first patriot, Gundala, whose film will be aired on Indonesian theaters by 29 August 2019

Top Indonesian actors and actresses were cast to represent key characters in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe. Abimana Aryasatya was cast to portray Gundala, Joe Taslim as Mandala, Chicco Jerikho as Godam, Pevita Pearce as Sri Asih, Chelsea Islan as Tira, Tara Basro as Merpati, Asmara Abigail as Desti Nikita, Hannah Al Rashid as Camar, Kelly Tandiono as Eagle-eyed Angel, Vanesha Prescilla as Cempaka, Della Dartyan as Nila Umaya, Ario Bayu as Ghani Zulham, Bront Palarae as Pengkor, Lukman Sardi as Ridwan Bahri, Daniel Adnan as Tanto Ginanjar, Tatjana Saphira as Mustika the Collector, Zara JKT48 as Virgo, Dian Sastrowardoyo as the Goddess of Fire, and Nicholas Saputra as Aquanus.

As the creative producer, Joko Anwar said that Bumilangit Cinematic Universe is an extension of the universe of stories inspired by comics from a long time ago, “These stories have existed since the 60s. Comic characters from different authors can meet and fight together in one publication. Bumilangit Cinematic Universe adapted these comics stories. “

Regarding future plans, Anwar gave a tip-off, “There are seven films being prepared which exist in the Swordmen and Patriot eras. They are Sri Asih, Godam and Tira, The Blind from the Phantom Cave, Patriot Taruna, Mandala, Gundala The Son of Lightning, and Patriot. In these films, other characters will appear as well. We have thoughtfully made the story and the development of each character from the first film to the end. Later it will be developed further by each director and writer for each film. So all the characterization and stories will be preserved. “

Bumilangit, which was founded in 2003, is a leading character-based entertainment company in Indonesia which manages the largest characters library with around 1.000 characters created by many legendary Indonesian comic artists. The legends include the father of Indonesian comics RA Kosasih, Ganes TH., Hasmi, Jan Mintaraga, Mansyur Daman, Wid NS, Nono GM, Banuarli Ambardi, Mater, to Iwan Nazif and Is Yuniarto. They are the original artists whose works are licensed to Bumilangit.

The Bumilangit Universe began in the 75,000 BC when Mount Toba erupted. The universe is divided into four eras, namely the Era of Legends, Era of Swordsmen, Era of Patriot, and Era of Revolution. Swordsmen era is the era of the warriors in the royal era of Nusantara, Indonesia in ancient times. The swordsmen universe has 500 characters with 50 published comic titles. Among them are the Blind From the Phantom Cave and Mandala.

While the Patriot Era is the era of the heroes in the present days. Patriot universe consists of 700 characters and 110 comic titles, which have been published and sold. Throughout its history, these comics have sold more than two million copies and read by more than ten million people. Notable characters include Gundala, Sri Asih, Godam, Tira, Sembrani and many others.

As the opening of Bumilangit Cinematic Universe, Bumilangit Studios and Screenplay Films in collaboration with Legacy Pictures and Ideosource Entertainment present ‘Gundala,’ which will air in Indonesian theaters on 29 August 2019. ‘Gundala’ film was written and directed by Joko Anwar. Gundala is portrayed by Abimana Aryasatya. The return of Hasmi’s character to the big screen is expected to show the new generation that Indonesia has a hero to be proud of.

On the international stage, Gundala has managed to penetrate the Toronto International Film Festival along with some of the world’s most awaited films this year, including Todd Phillips’s JOKER, RADIOACTIVE from Marjane Satrapi, and KNIVES OUT, starring Chris Evans and Daniel Craig. Gundala will compete with other films for the People’s Choice Awards. It will be the only Southeast Asian film screened in the Midnight Madness program of the festival.

On July 6th, 2022, Sri Asih, the second film in Bumilangit Cinematic Universe, directed by Upi and starring Pevita Pearce as Alana / Sri Asih, released its first official teaser. The film will be released in November 17th, 2022. 

The 3rd film of Bumilangit Cinematic Universe is Virgo and The Sparklings, directed by Ody C. Harahap and starring Adhisty Zara as Riani or Virgo. This film will be released in 2023 and the first trailer will be released exclusively in theaters attached before Sri Asih.
