| Indonesia’s Public Postal Company Launched Indonesian Heroes Series Stamps

Indonesia’s public postal company, PT Pos Indonesia (Persero), has launched Indonesian Heroes Series stamps at Cohive Space, Jakarta Philately Building (4/19). The Indonesia Heroes Series stamps have several designs including Gundala Putera Petir, Si Buta dari Gua Hantu, and Sri Asih. In the making of Indonesian Heroes Series stamps, Pos Indonesia collaborated with Indonesian Comics Foundation.

April 4, 2019 coincides with 100 year anniversary of R.A. Kosasih, father of Indonesian comics. Through the scratches of his hands, society discover the stories of heroism from the world of traditional puppets, Nusantara legends, to typical Indonesian superheroes.

Talking about heroes, it turns out that it does not always display “jago” characters that can be mean as “rooster”. Sri Asih is one of the example and also a milestone. She was the first female superheroes who appeared on January 1, 1954 in the Comics Magazine. Sri Asih inspired the birth of other superheroes in the Indonesian comic world. Sri Asih has also been appointed to the big screen in the same year. The character of Sri Asih was able to captivate the hearts of comic readers so that they could compete with comic strips from abroad who appeared in domestic magazines and newspapers at that time.

The year of 2019 coincides with the 52 years of Si Buta dari Gua Hantu birth. He is a blind warrior from Banten who traveled around Nusantara to uphold justice and eradicate anger. Since its appearance at the end of 1967, this warrior created by Ganes TH has changed the world map of Indonesian comics. Previously Indonesian comics mostly dwell on romance and legend genre, after his appearance it shifted to the genre of martial art in majority. More than 7 wide screen films adaptation of the comic Si Buta dari Gua Hantu have been made in the span of 1970s to 1980s.

This year is also the 50th anniversary of Gundala Putera Petir, the most well-known hero in Indonesia by Hasmi that appeared since mid-1969. Gundala was appointed to the big screen in 1981 coincide with his golden anniversary, meanwhile in this year there will be a new film of Gundala that directed by Joko Anwar.

Sri Asih, Si Buta dari Gua Hantu, and Gundala, will be present together in Indonesian Heroes Series stamps which was officially issued by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia through Pos Indonesia.

The presence of this stamp series is a legacy of the spirit from the maestros and also part of the long history of Indonesian comics. This also serves as a reminder that the values of heroism will remain alive today and forever. Through Indonesian comics, these heroes will continue to fill the imagination of our children, the millennials today and inspire their daily lives.

This Indonesian Heroes Series stamps has been printed in the amount of 90.000 sets and has been available at the post office starting from April 4, 2019. One sheet of this stamps series consist of 15 pieces and sold for Rp45.000,-. Besides the stamps series, there are also 20.000 Carik Kenangan (Souvenir Sheets) as much as 20.000 sets and sold for Rp20.000,-. The last one is First Day Cover as  much as 1.000 sets and sold for Rp60.000,-.
